According to Template:Harvcoltxt, Script error: No such module "IPA". is realized as a voiced trill, either uvular [ʀ] or alveolar [r]. Between vowels, it is sometimes realized with one contact (i.e. as a tap) Script error: No such module "IPA".,Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. whereas word-finally, it can be devoiced to Script error: No such module "IPA"..[1]

According to Template:Harvcoltxt, about two thirds of speakers have a uvular Script error: No such module "IPA"., whereas about one third has a categorical alveolar Script error: No such module "IPA".. There are also a few speakers who mix uvular and alveolar articulations.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

Among uvular articulations, he lists uvular trill [ʀ], uvular fricative trill [ʀ̝], uvular fricative [ʁ] and uvular approximant [ʁ̞], which are used more or less equally often in all contexts. Almost all speakers with a uvular Script error: No such module "IPA". use all four of these realizations.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

Among alveolar articulations, he lists alveolar tap [ɾ], voiced alveolar fricative [ɹ̝], alveolar approximant [ɹ], voiceless alveolar trill [], alveolar tapped or trilled fricative Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiceless alveolar tap [ɾ̥] and voiceless alveolar fricative [ɹ̝̊]. Among these, the tap is most common, whereas the tapped/trilled fricative is the second most common realization.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

Elsewhere in the article, the consonant is transcribed Template:Angbr IPA for the sake of consistency with IPA transcriptions of other dialects of Limburgish.

  • The Hasselt dialect has undergone both the Old Saxon monophthongization (which has turned the older Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang". into Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang".) and the monophthongization of the former Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". to Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". (which was then mostly merged with Script error: No such module "IPA". due to the unrounding described below).
  • Among the marginal vowels, the nasal ones occur only in French loanwords (note that Script error: No such module "IPA". is typically transcribed with Template:Angbr IPA in transcriptions of French and that Script error: No such module "IPA". is very rare, as in Standard Dutch), whereas Script error: No such module "IPA". is restricted to loanwords from standard Dutch and English. As in about 50 other dialects spoken in Belgian Limburg, the rounded front vowels Script error: No such module "IPA". have largely been replaced with their unrounded counterparts Script error: No such module "IPA". and are mostly restricted to loanwords from French. The marginal diphthong Script error: No such module "IPA". occurs only in loanwords from French and interjections. Script error: No such module "IPA". is also rare, and like Script error: No such module "IPA". occurs only in the word-final position.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
  • Phonetically, Script error: No such module "IPA". is near-front [a̠ː].Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
  • All of the back vowels are almost fully back.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Among these, Script error: No such module "IPA". and the non-native Script error: No such module "IPA". are rounded, whereas Script error: No such module "IPA". are unrounded.
  • Before alveolar consonants, the long monophthongs Script error: No such module "IPA". and the diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA". are realized as centering diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA".. In the case of Script error: No such module "IPA"., this happens only before sonorants, with the disyllabic Script error: No such module "IPA". being an alternative pronunciation. Thus, Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'distress', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'fashion', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'news', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'tired' surface as Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA".. The distinction between a long monophthong and a centering diphthong is only phonemic in the case of the Script error: No such module "IPA". pair, as exemplified by the minimal pair Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'broad' vs. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'plank'.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

    • Script error: No such module "IPA". occurs only in unstressed syllables.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
  • Script error: No such module "IPA". is near-open, whereas Script error: No such module "IPA". are open.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
  • Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". have somewhat advanced first elements (Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"., respectively). The latter diphthong occurs only in the word-final position.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
  • Among the closing-fronting diphthongs, the ending points of Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". tend to be closer to [] than [i]; in addition, the first element of Script error: No such module "IPA". is closer to [ɐ]: Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

There are three combinations of long monophthongs with coda Script error: No such module "IPA". - those are Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"., with the latter two occurring only in the word-final position, as in Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'harm' (pl.) and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'drawer'. An example word for the sequence Script error: No such module "IPA". is Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'unwillingly'.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

Stress and tone

Script error: No such module "Labelled list hatnote". The location of stress is the same as in Belgian Standard Dutch. In compound nouns, the stress is sometimes shifted to the second element (the head noun), as in stadhäös Script error: No such module "IPA". 'town hall'. Loanwords from French sometimes preserve the original final stress.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

As many other Limburgish dialects, the Hasselt dialect features a phonemic pitch accent, a distinction between the 'push tone' (Script error: No such module "Lang".) and the 'dragging tone' (Script error: No such module "Lang".). It can be assumed that the latter is a lexical low tone, whereas the former is lexically toneless. Examples of words differing only by pitch accent include Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'hen' vs. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'them' as well as Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'mountains' vs. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'mountain'.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Phonetically, the push tone rises then falls (Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA".), whereas the dragging tone falls, then rises, then falls again (Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA".). This phonetic realization of pitch accent is called Rule 0 by Björn Köhnlein.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Elsewhere in the article, the broad transcription Template:Angbr IPA is used even in phonetic transcription.

A unique feature of this dialect is that all stressed syllables can bear either of the accents, even the CVC syllables with a non-sonorant coda. In compounds, all combinations of pitch accent are possible: Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'Old Street', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'Fish Market', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'Oak Street' and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'Fruit Market'.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
