The small ke (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is a Japanese character, typographically a small form of the katakana character Script error: No such module "Lang". ke.[1]
While identical in shape to a small Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang". is actually an abbreviation for the kanji Script error: No such module "Lang"., specifically by writing half of the bamboo radical Script error: No such module "Lang". (Script error: No such module "Lang".). Script error: No such module "Lang"., alternatively written as Script error: No such module "Lang". (or Script error: No such module "Lang".), is a common Japanese counter word. Script error: No such module "Lang". is also as an abbreviation for the Japanese conjunctive particle Script error: No such module "Lang"..
It is unrelated to the katakana character Script error: No such module "Lang". (which is an abbreviation for Script error: No such module "Lang".) but Script error: No such module "Lang". is sometimes written as a large character Script error: No such module "Lang"..
Although it resembles the katakana character ke (Script error: No such module "Lang".), it is pronounced ka (sometimes ko) when it specifies a counter, or ga when it specifies a conjunction, but not ke.
When used as a counter, the katakana Script error: No such module "Lang". or Script error: No such module "Lang". are sometimes used instead. When used as a counter but pronounced ko, the katakana Script error: No such module "Lang". is sometimes used instead (chiefly in informal writing).
However, Script error: No such module "Lang". is not used as a general abbreviation for Script error: No such module "Lang". or Script error: No such module "Lang".. For example, Script error: No such module "Lang". kojin, "individual" will not be written as Script error: No such module "Lang". (except possibly as very informal ryakuji; contrast with Script error: No such module "Lang"., as an abbreviation for Script error: No such module "Lang".). Note that Script error: No such module "Lang". is used in various words, but Script error: No such module "Lang". is generally only used as a counter, or as a variant of Script error: No such module "Lang"..
The most familiar example as a counter is for counting months, as in Script error: No such module "Lang". (ik-ka-getsu, one month [duration]) where it is pronounced ka. Other common examples are places Script error: No such module "Lang". (~ka-sho) and countries Script error: No such module "Lang". (~ka-koku).
An example where it is pronounced as ko is when counting small objects, such as pieces of fruit or candy, where one may write Script error: No such module "Lang". (ik-ko), rather than the more formal Script error: No such module "Lang".; this is particularly common in hand-written signs at shops, though Script error: No such module "Lang". is also common.
When used as the conjunction Script error: No such module "Lang". (~-ga-~), it has the same meaning as Script error: No such module "Lang". (~-no-~) which is more common in modern Japanese and is commonly used in place names, though rare in everyday words.
One relatively common word using Script error: No such module "Lang". is Script error: No such module "Lang". karigane (kari-ga-ne, goose-'s-sound, 'the cry of the wild goose').
In place names, it is generally a conjunction, and hence pronounced ga, particularly as Script error: No such module "Lang". (-ga-hara) "field of ...", as in Script error: No such module "Lang". (Aokigahara, field of green trees). It may also be a counter, where it will generally be pronounced ka, as in Script error: No such module "Lang". (Mikkabi, place name, "three days").
In some cases both Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang". (and even Script error: No such module "Lang".) are used to write a place name, depending on the specific place with a given name or usage. This may have also changed over time, so older documents may use a different form, and older institutions may use an outdated spelling. The most conspicuous example is Jiyūgaoka, which refers to a number of places throughout Japan (see Script error: No such module "Lang".), some of which officially use Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., or Script error: No such module "Lang".. The best-known of these is a popular neighborhood in Tokyo, whose official form is Script error: No such module "Lang"., but it was formerly Script error: No such module "Lang"., changing in 1965 (the station changed in 1966), and some businesses use the older form.
The hiragana version of the character exists in Unicode as Script error: No such module "Lang"., but it is virtually unused.
