Weert dialect or Weert Limburgish (natively Script error: No such module "Lang"., Standard Dutch: Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".) is the city dialect and variant of Limburgish spoken in the Dutch city of Weert alongside Standard Dutch. All of its speakers are bilingual with standard Dutch.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. There are two varieties of the dialect: rural and urban. The latter is called Script error: No such module "Lang". in Standard Dutch and Script error: No such module "Lang". in the city dialect.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Van der Looij gives the Dutch name Script error: No such module "Lang". for the peripheral dialect.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
Unless otherwise noted, all examples are in Script error: No such module "Lang"..
Influence of Standard Dutch
Some dialect words are frequently replaced with their Standard Dutch counterparts, so that Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'chickens', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'you' (pl.) and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". The voiced velar stop Script error: No such module "IPA". is used less often by younger speakers, who merge it with the voiced velar fricative Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. In Standard Dutch, [ɡ] occurs only as an allophone of Script error: No such module "IPA". before voiced stops, as in Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". Vowels
According to Peter Ladefoged, the vowel inventory of the dialect of Weert may be the richest in the world. It features 28 vowels, among which there are 12 long monophthongs (three of which surface as centering diphthongs), 10 short monophthongs and 6 diphthongs.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Such a large vowel inventory is a result of the loss of a contrastive pitch accent found in other Limburgish dialects, giving Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". a phonemic status. Those vowels correspond to the phonemically short Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". combined with Accent 2 in other dialects.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

In the table above, the vowels spelled with ⟨i⟩, ⟨u⟩, ⟨ö⟩ and ⟨äö⟩ are transcribed with phonetically explicit symbols. Elsewhere in the article, the diacritics are ignored for vowels other than Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"., in case of which the lowering diacritic is essential in order to distinguish them from the close-mid Script error: No such module "IPA"..
- The Weert dialect features five phonetic degrees of openness among unrounded front vowels: close, close-mid, mid, open-mid and open.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. The long unrounded front vowels Script error: No such module "IPA". differ mostly in height, in addition to the centering glide in Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Furthermore, Script error: No such module "IPA". is clearly not front phonologically as it is subject to umlauting in diminutives and in other contexts, as in other Limburgish dialects. This suggests that it is phonologically central, as in Hamont as well as the vowel transcribed with the same symbol in German. This contrast between the phonologically central Script error: No such module "IPA". and the phonologically back Script error: No such module "IPA". surfaces as a phonetic front-back distinction, as Script error: No such module "IPA". is phonetically near-front [a̠ː], whereas Script error: No such module "IPA". is near-back [ɑ̟ː].Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- The distinction between Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". is a genuine distinction between close-mid, mid and open-mid vowels of the same length, roundedness and very similar backness: Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. It is much like the distinction found in the Kensiu language.
- Script error: No such module "IPA". is central [ɵ], rather than front.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- Older speakers may have an additional vowel Script error: No such module "IPA"., giving rise to a phonemic contrast between the short closed O Script error: No such module "IPA". (spelled ⟨ó⟩) and the short open O Script error: No such module "IPA". (spelled ⟨o⟩). Other speakers have just three short back vowels Script error: No such module "IPA"., as in Standard Dutch.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Elsewhere in the article, the difference is not transcribed and Template:Angbr IPA is used for both vowels.
- Some speakers are not secure in the distribution of Script error: No such module "IPA". vs. Script error: No such module "IPA". as well as Script error: No such module "IPA". vs. Script error: No such module "IPA".. In the future, this may lead to a merger of the two pairs, leaving a short vowel system that is exactly the same as in Standard Dutch (phonetic details aside).Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- As in other Limburgish dialects, Script error: No such module "IPA". umlauts to Script error: No such module "IPA". and so it patterns with the phonetic mid vowels, rather than the phonetically open-mid Script error: No such module "IPA"..
- The centering diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA". (as in Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'seven', Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'door' and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'through') often correspond to the close-mid Script error: No such module "IPA". in the Script error: No such module "Lang". variety: Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".. The extensive usage of Script error: No such module "IPA". in the Script error: No such module "Lang". variety brings it considerably closer to Standard Dutch than Script error: No such module "Lang".. The Weertlands varieties spoken in Nederweert and Ospel also use Script error: No such module "IPA". in this context. The difference is systematic, though it does not occur throughout the entire vocabulary of words with those vowels. For instance, the word meaning 'residence' or 'house' varies between Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". in both varieties, rather than being Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". or Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". in the Script error: No such module "Lang". variety.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
Taking all of that into consideration, the vocalic phonemes of the Weert dialect can be classified much like those found in other Limburgish dialects. Peter Ladefoged says that the Weert dialect is an example of a language variety that needs five height features to distinguish between Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"., which are [high], [mid-high], [mid], [mid-low] and [low], respectively.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.

In this table, vowels in the mid row correspond to the open-mid Script error: No such module "IPA". in other dialects. The two vowels in the open-mid row correspond to the open Script error: No such module "IPA". in other dialects, which means that the open-mid row can be merged with the open row, leaving just four phonemic heights. In this article, five heights are assumed, following the sources. In his paper on the best IPA transcription of Standard Dutch, Gussenhoven has criticized the analysis of the open-mid Script error: No such module "IPA". as phonologically open on the basis of the vowel being phonetically too close to be analyzed as open like Script error: No such module "IPA". (which is front in Standard Dutch, just like in Weert).Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
The vowel+glide sequences Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". pattern as the short counterparts of Script error: No such module "IPA". - see below.
Phonetic realization
- The long close-mid Script error: No such module "IPA". often feature a centering glide Script error: No such module "IPA".. Before nasals, the first two are monophthongized to [eː] and [ɵː].Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Elsewhere in the article, their diphthongal nature is ignored.
- Among the unrounded front vowels, Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". are retracted like Script error: No such module "IPA"., being near-front Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- Apart from the phonetically central Script error: No such module "IPA"., the phonemic front rounded vowels are phonetically front, including the onset of Script error: No such module "IPA".: Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- Among the back vowels, Script error: No such module "IPA". and the onset of Script error: No such module "IPA". are advanced like Script error: No such module "IPA".: Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". are less open than in other dialects, being true-mid Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. In other dialects, they tend to be open-mid Script error: No such module "IPA".. This raising of the historical [ɛː] does not result in a merger with Script error: No such module "IPA". (unlike in Maastrichtian), due to the centering glide found in the latter. Neither does Script error: No such module "IPA". merge with Script error: No such module "IPA"., for the same reason. The back Script error: No such module "IPA". is more open than Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"., making it similar to the corresponding cardinal vowel [ɔ]. The corresponding short vowels have the same quality: Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- The closing diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA". are similar in quality to their Standard Dutch counterparts. Their ending points are more open than in Maastrichtian, in which especially Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". end in fully close glides [j] and [w] when they are combined with Accent 1, in addition to the rounded starting point of Script error: No such module "IPA".: Script error: No such module "IPA". (the ending point of Script error: No such module "IPA". is also fully close: Script error: No such module "IPA".).Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
Phonotactics
- Script error: No such module "IPA". occurs only in unstressed syllables.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- Script error: No such module "IPA". are phonological long monophthongs despite their obvious diphthongal nature. That is because they can occur before Script error: No such module "IPA"., unlike any of the six phonological diphthongs and Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. However, at least Script error: No such module "IPA". sometimes violates that rule, as it occurs in the name of the town itself (Script error: No such module "IPA".) and derivatives.
- Script error: No such module "IPA". are rare before Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- Among the long open(-mid) vowels, Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". appear only before sonorants, making them checked vowels. They directly correspond to the short checked vowels Script error: No such module "IPA". combined with Accent 2 in other dialects (in which Script error: No such module "IPA". corresponds to Weert Script error: No such module "IPA".). Thus, the phonological behavior of the long Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". is very different to that of Script error: No such module "IPA"., which is a free vowel like the other long vowels.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
- The closing diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA". are rare in the word-final position.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
Differences in transcription

This means that the symbols Template:Angbr IPA and Template:Angbr IPA have the opposite values, depending on the system. In this article, they stand for the vowels in words such as Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".. However, Template:Harvcoltxt use them for the vowels in Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"., whereas Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang". are written with Template:Angbr IPA and Template:Angbr IPA, respectively. In IPA transcriptions of Limburgish, the usual symbols employed for such words are Template:Angbr IPA and Template:Angbr IPA. In this article, a phonetically explicit transcription Template:Angbr IPA is used, not least because Template:Angbr IPA are as close as Script error: No such module "IPA". in Weert. This transcription closely follows the symbols chosen by Template:Harvcoltxt, though he does not use the lowering diacritic for the vowels in Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang".. Furthermore, the phonetic open front vowel of Weert is Script error: No such module "IPA"., which is as front as Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"..
The closing diphthongs are given a phonetically explicit transcription Template:Angbr IPA in this article to match the changes described above. This kind of transcription has been used by e.g. Template:Harvcoltxt for vowels found in a transitional Brabantian-Limburgish dialect of Orsmaal-Gussenhoven.
Vowel+glide sequences
The Weert dialect allows a very large amount of vowel+glide sequences. Both short and long vowels can precede Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA".; in addition to that, the combinations with short vowels can be followed by a tautosyllabic consonant. There are five times as many possible combinations of a vowel followed by Script error: No such module "IPA". than the possible combination of a vowel+Script error: No such module "IPA".: 15 in the former case (Script error: No such module "IPA".) and just 3 in the latter case (Script error: No such module "IPA".). Out of those, both Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". are marginal.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. Speakers who distinguish Script error: No such module "IPA". from Script error: No such module "IPA". feature an additional sequence Script error: No such module "IPA"..Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
The sequences Script error: No such module "IPA". contrast with the diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA".. The former begin with more open vowels than the diphthongs. In addition, the diphthongs are all longer than the sequences. Thus, what in tonal dialects of Limburgish is the contrast between Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'legs' (pronounced with Accent 1) and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'leg' (pronounced with Accent 2) is a length and vowel quality difference in Weert: Script error: No such module "IPA". vs. Script error: No such module "IPA".. Other (near-)minimal pairs include Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'German' (adj.) vs. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'fun' and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'eye' vs. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'also'.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. This kind of contrast between a vowel+glide sequence and a diphthong is extremely rare in the world's languages.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
Suprasegmentals
The Weert dialect features an intonation system that is very similar to Standard Dutch. The stress pattern is the same as in the standard language. It does not feature a contrastive pitch accent, instead, the difference between Accent 1 and Accent 2 found in the more easterly dialects of Limburgish corresponds to a vowel length distinction in Weert; compare Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'rabbits' and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'mountains' with Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'rabbit' and Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". 'mountain'. The phonological vowel+glide sequences Script error: No such module "IPA". correspond to Script error: No such module "IPA". combined with Accent 1 in other dialects, whereas the phonological diphthongs Script error: No such module "IPA". (which are longer than the vowel+glide sequences) correspond to Script error: No such module "IPA". combined with Accent 2 in other dialects.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
According to Linda Heijmans, Weert dialect may have never been tonal at all, and the use of contrastive vowel length in minimal pairs such as Script error: No such module "Lang".–Script error: No such module "Lang". could have sprung from the desire to sound like speakers of tonal dialects spoken nearby Weert, such as the dialect of Baexem.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found. This hypothesis has been rejected by Jo Verhoeven, who found that Weert speakers can still distinguish between the former tonal pairs on the basis of tone whenever vowel length is ambiguous. Thus, his findings support the theory that the former tone distinction was at some point reinterpreted as a vowel length distinction.Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Footnotes/anchor_id_list' not found.
